        Ch'ien Chung-shu (Qian ZhongSu, 1910-1998) was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu province. Upon graduation from grade school, he attended St. john's Univerisity Affiliated High School in Soochow and Wuxi. He studied English, Latin and modern European languages for two years at Oxford. He wrote some of the most important texts on classical Chinese poetry, essays, short stories, and edited various groundbreaking anthologies
